The safety of long-term use of haritaki isn't known. However, since haritaki may reduce blood sugar levels, there's some concern that using it in combination with blood-sugar-lowering medications may have harmful effects. Given this concern, it's important to talk to your doctor prior to using haritaki in combination with blood-sugar-lowering drugs (such as diabetes medications).

Take around two tablespoonfuls of Herbal decoction and mix it well with around two cups of water (Around 150 ml water) in the evening hours. Keep the mixture for whole night. The very next morning, boil this mixture on light to medium flame. Shake it well during boiling. Gradually the water will start to get evaporating. When around half cup of water remains in the mixture during boiling, take it down. Strain the liquid into a glass or ceramic container using a sieve or a cloth such as a jelly bag or muslin cloth. Drink the freshly prepared liquid decoction after 4-5 minutes.
Haritaki has been researched for ingredients that are helpful in the treatment of various illnesses, to verify the uses that have been ascribed to it by Ayurveda doctors. The list of ingredients is extensive. Many of these ingredients are recognized as having healing properties including: anticancer, antibacterial, anti-diabetic, and antioxidant properties.
Haritaki contains antibacterial agents that clean the gut of harmful bacteria. Researchers point out that for every hour the human waste stays in the gut the bacteria multiply by many millions. Many of these bacteria are harmful and have been connected with diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Researchers have found that the bacteria penetrate the  intestinal walls, and create cuts. These cuts are similar to the lesions that appear in the brain as part of the onset of these diseases. Very interestingly, these cuts in the intestinal walls are showing up up to 20 years in advance of the cuts appearing in the brain. The conclusion is that the disease spreads through the central nervous system to the brain. Tests for early onset of Parkinson’s are now being conducted by looking into the intestines for signs of these cuts.
Haritaki contains Sennosides, known as stimulant laxatives, which are an effective treatment for relieving constipation and cleaning the colon. The process of waste elimination is assisted by Sennosides acting to retain water within the intestines, thus helping to dislodge water matter within the intestines. Sennosides can also be used to eliminate waste from the bowel before an examination or surgery.
Haritaki may help increase the expression of antioxidants found to fight oxidative stress, according to a 2009 study from Cell Biochemistry and Function. In tests on aging rats, the study's authors observed that treatment with haritaki helped boost concentrations of several antioxidants (including glutathione, superoxide dismutase, vitamin C, and vitamin E).

I found this article very interesting and well written. However I have a constructive criticism in that nowhere in the article does it mention the excellent use of the fruit of this plant for helping with curing or slowing down cervical spondylosis, or arthitis in the neck, which is greatly bothering me as I type these words. I have googled ways to deal with this disease by eating certain foods and avoiding others (such as the nightshade vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant, etc.), and chebulic myrobalan was highly recommended on many medical websites. How do I consume the plant, by eating the nuts or fruits. Sorry but I know very little about this panacea like remedy. Thanks for any comments you have. Bruce Winslow, PhD

It is one of the ingredients of the renowned formulation Triphala (Three myrobalans). The mythological origin of the plant represents the immortal nature of therapeutic attributes in the human body. Indian Gooseberry Arginine Search form Haritaki or Harde Whole is a plant that is widely used throughout the Indian subcontinent. Its scientific name is Terminalia chebula. It grows at altitudes of over 1800 meters above sea level and is a moderately small plant. It grows to about 2.5 meters tall, it is one of those plants that have been used for many centuries as a common household cure. It takes an important place in the culture and medicinal practices of ancient India. It is related to the turmeric and the roots and fruits of the plant are used.
Information on the varieies of Haritaki was collected from all ancient literatures of Ayurveda and the lexicons of Medicinal plants (Nighantus), recent literature, journals, and information gathered from the internet. Comprehensive data was prepared after refrerring with the Herbarium of the Regional Research Institute of Himalayan Flora, Tarikhet, ‘Acronym-RKT,’ under the guidance of the taxonomist of the institute.
My own discovery of Haritaki goes back several years. I was at the ashram of Paramahamsa Nithyananda in the small town of Bidadi near Bangalore, India. Nithyananda had just been appointed as the next head of the oldest monastery in South India, in the town of Madurai. He had used Haritaki as a child, growing up in his native village, but had not used it extensively since then.  While in Madurai, Nithyananda found that the monastery had been using Haritaki for over 1500 years as a spiritual practice. It was recognized within the organization as highly important for the continued spiritual growth of the leadership of the monastery. When Nithyananda began using once again Haritaki on a daily basis, and observing others who had been taking it for some time, he saw remarkable results. He observed that his level of oxygen flowing into the brain was increasing, and saw that it reached to the level of three times the normal flow. He had never witnessed this with the use of any other herbal or fruit product. The other effects he observed were a re-wiring of the brain. He observed that neural networks that were connecting negative emotions and memories of negative events were becoming weaker with Haritaki. This is obviously a massive benefit. Typically, psychologists and brain researchers say that we have 90% of negative thoughts running through our brains on any given day. When this mind noise is reduced we become much more able to process thoughts that are creative and proactive. Not only does this positively affect our day to day functioning; ability to do tasks, and our overall happiness, it releases brain capacity to be used for other functions.
