Terminalia chebula may prevent ferric nitrilotriacetic acid (Fe- NTA)-induced renal tumorigenesis in Wistar rats (38), and Triphala (a combination of Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellerica, and Emblica officinalis) may reduce benzo(a)pyrene-induced forestomach papillomagenesis in mice (39).

The Ac1 test can be used to determine blood glucose (blood sugar ) levels over a three month period and can help in the diagnosis of pre-diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. Scientific studies on Haritaki have demonstrated its active compounds assisting with the maintenance of stable blood glucose levels and in helping to prevent insulin resistance. Haritaki has therefore been shown to be an effective remedy to help lower a person’s A1c levels, meaning it can be used as both a preventative measure against Type 2 diabetes development — and to assist those whom are already diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes by helping to increase glucose tolerance. Further studies are needed, but Harataki shows promise as a natural aid to decrease insulin resistance and has been used Traditionally for hundreds of years to stabilise fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

Let us introduce you to haritaki (Terminalia chebula), one of the best allies in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Already heard of it? We’re not surprised, as it is one of the “Three Musketeers” of triphala, the most popular formula in Ayurveda. Beyond haritaki’s invaluable role in triphala, it is well worth our time to learn a little more about this particular “musketeer.” Haritaki is deeply revered in Ayurveda, and this respect is reflected in its many names—it is “the life giving,” “the animating,” “the unfailing,” “the restorative,” and “fearless against ill health.”1 It is even called “the divine fruit” and “the medicine that rejects all diseases.”2 Wow! This herb really is one for all (if you will please excuse the pun), bringing balance to all doshas, helping to cleanse the system, maintain regularity, and nourish and rejuvenate all the tissues—and so much more.

An irreplaceable ingredient in Ayurvedic medicinal recipes, Haritaki is listed in the wonderfully researched book, The Way of Ayurveda Herbs and, some of the healing abilities attributed to Haritaki are; reducing the severity of coughs because it contains antitussive properties, ease vomiting and acute diarrhoea, heal skin conditions, soothe a sore throat, parasitic elimination, calm and cure digestive issues, help with the malabsorption of nutrients, tumour suppression, reverse jaundice caused by liver disease and act as a “cardiotonic” to assist those at risk of, or suffering from, heart disease.

Haritaki is traditionally used to address all vata-related imbalances. It maintains regular elimination, helps promote healthy body mass, and supports comfortable and complete digestion. Haritaki is highly revered in India, as it is believed to increase energy, intelligence, and awareness.*
Triphala is most commonly known for its use as a gentle bowel tonic, being helpful in digestion, and supporting regular bowel movements. The combination of the three fruits has a synergistic effect to bolster many other systems as well. In addition to the GI tract, Ayurveda uses triphala churna to support healthy respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary, reproductive, and nervous systems.1 Triphala has also been shown to be a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.2, 3 The three fruits involved in making triphala are also known for their individual effects:1

Following your natural circadian rhythm is necessary to awaken the third eye. That means you should mostly wake up at sunrise and go to sleep a few hours after the sunset. Your body then knows how to maintain a high level of energetic stability. If, however, you’re glued to your laptop, the TV screen or your mobile device, you can disrupt this natural flow of energy (especially if you do it right before going to sleep).

Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that can form in your gallbladder. Your gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ on the right side of your abdomen, just beneath your liver. The gallbladder holds a digestive fluid called bile that’s released into your small intestine. Gallstones range in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. Some people develop just one gallstone, while others develop many gallstones at the same time. People who experience symptoms from their gallstones usually require gallbladder removal surgery. Gallstones that don’t cause any signs and symptoms typically don’t need treatment.
